I don’t wait for moods. You accomplish nothing if you do that. Your mind must know it has got to get down to work.– (via dreamloftydreams)

Nothing chaps my lips like the idea that interp is easy. There’s some nasty little myth burrowing into people’s minds that picking up a story, a poem, or a piece of drama and pulling the juicy humanity out of it happens effortlessly. I find it insulting that people don’t consider interp to be as challenging an endeavor as debate or other individual events. Interp requires a different type of intelligence. Creativity is a different type of intelligence.
NPR’s This American Life host Ira Glass has a wonderful sound bite about how much time and work individuals with creative endeavors pour into their work. Brain Pickings posted the animated short that accompanies the interview. I think it’s a wonderful video to watch if you’re in a slump with your performances - which is epidemic this time of the season.

From my experience, you can’t wait around to find what you love. You gotta work your ass off. And then you find what you love by doing piles and piles of work.

Always push yourself. When you feel like you’re done, do just five more.
Five more minutes.
Five more pages.
Five more problems.
Five more steps. Then five more. And five more.
Demand more from yourself and see how far it takes you. See how far you get in life.
(Taking this five steps further, do five more until you absolutely can’t do five more. Then do five more. After that last five, you can stop. That’s when you’re really done for the day, and that’s how to push yourself to 100%.)
